What are the HAGOS and VISA methods of surveying athletes?

The HAGOS (Health-related Athletic Goal-oriented Survey) and the VISA (Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment) methods are two widely used tools for surveying athletes and assessing their physical and mental health.

Why do they matter?

The HAGOS survey is a self-reported questionnaire that measures various aspects of an athlete's physical and mental health, including their level of physical fitness, injury risk, and quality of life. It includes questions about an athlete's current physical condition, as well as their goals and expectations for their sport. The HAGOS survey is designed to be easy to administer and can be used with athletes of all levels and ages.

The VISA method, on the other hand, is a clinical assessment tool that is used to assess an athlete's physical status. It includes a series of tests and measurements that assess an athlete's strength, flexibility, and endurance relevant to a specific tendon. The VISA questionnaire is typically used by sports medicine professionals as an important indicator of pain, function, and an athlete's readiness for training/competition. It is considered a more comprehensive and in-depth assessment of an athlete's physical condition.

What are their advantages?

Both the HAGOS and VISA methods have been shown to be effective in identifying and monitoring health-related issues in athletes. The HAGOS survey is particularly useful for identifying athletes who may be at risk of injury/pain or have an associated reduction in quality of life. Conversely, the VISA questionnaire is more appropriate when assessing an athlete's physical readiness for competition.

One of the key advantages of the HAGOS and VISA methods is that they are designed to be used in conjunction with each other. The HAGOS survey can be used to identify athletes who may be at risk for injury, while the VISA method can be used to assess an athlete's physical condition and readiness for competition. This allows sports medicine professionals to get a more complete picture of an athlete's health and performance.

Both the HAGOS and VISA methods are used to also track changes over time in hip, groin, and tendon health and function.

Another advantage of these methods is that they are designed to be used with a wide range of athletes, regardless of their level of skill or experience. This allows sports medicine professionals to identify and monitor health-related issues in athletes of all levels, from youth athletes to elite athletes.

Overall, the HAGOS and VISA methods are valuable tools for assessing the physical and mental health of athletes. They are designed to be easy to administer and can be used with athletes of all levels and ages. By using these methods in conjunction with each other, sports medicine professionals can get a more complete picture of an athlete's health and performance and help them achieve their goals.
